YORK City boss Russ Wilcox believes new midfielder James Berrett can carry on scoring after netting his second goal of the season in a 1-0 win over his former club Yeovil.

Berrett, who was transfer-listed by the Glovers in the summer, once struck ten times in back-to-back campaigns with Carlisle and Wilcox reckons he can target a similar tally for his new team.

His latest effort received the benefit of a significant deflection but the City chief reasoned: “He was a bit fortuitous with the goal but, if you don’t shoot, you don’t score and I think he’s getting better by the game.

“That’s two goals and I said he could do that for us when I brought him to the club. He’s got two already and he got double figures twice for Carlisle so, hopefully, he can do that for us.”

Second-year scholar Ben Godfrey, meanwhile, made his debut alongside Berrett in midfield with Wilcox impressed by his maiden outing.

“I was delighted with him,” the Minstermen boss added. “He did everything we asked of him.

“He’s a big lad who is physically strong for 17. He’s also good technically and athletic so he’s able to get around the pitch.

“He’s not afraid to make a tackle either and gets stuck in. It’s great for the academy to see him come through and flourish.

“He will only get better and he’s been on a winning team now, which is great. It was a brave decision to play him but the only way you find out about young lads is by putting him in.

“He also showed in pre-season, when we had injuries, that he could perform in the arena and he’s done it again.”

Godfrey came in for the injured Luke Summerfield, who could return for Saturday’s away trip to Exeter.

“Luke was touch and go and has got some bruising,” Wilcox revealed. “We’re hoping he will be available for the weekend because he’s in top form.”

The win, meanwhile, saw York pick up their first points during their third league match of the season with Wilcox admitting: “I’m delighted to get off the mark.

“We’re three points off the play-offs now and, while people might chuckle at that, it’s all about positive mindsets. We weren’t as fluent as we have been and didn’t play as much football but, even though it got a bit hairy-scary in the last five minutes, we saw the game out and kept a clean sheet.”
