MARVIN McCoy is determined to extend his pre-season scoring streak into the new campaign for York City.

The 26-year-old right back has never netted in 144 appearances at professional level but was the Minstermen's surprise leading marksman during the friendly games, following efforts against Championship outfits Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday.

His goals came from a wing-back role in City's 3-5-2 formation and McCoy is now planning to break that Football League duck as the 2015/16 season gets underway at his former club Wycombe tomorrow.

On his new-found goal knack, McCoy said: "I would love to take it into the season. I could have scored another at Halifax as well on Saturday but, hopefully, it was a case of saving the next one for tomorrow."

McCoy, who was placed on the transfer list in May but started all but the first of City's pre-season fixtures, has also welcomed City chief Russ Wilcox's comments that he would not entertain any inquires for the ex-Harrow Borough and Wealdstone defender at the moment.

"I'm happy with that and I'm just concentrating on my football so the rest will take care of itself," McCoy added. "The manager has been honest with me and, hopefully, I've changed his mind.

"I was on the transfer list but that's never the be all and end all. I've always been positive and confident in my ability to get back in the fold some way.

"I just went away, worked hard and came back to show what I'm all about and that I've got things to offer the club so I'm glad to have been playing. There were a few little bits of interest in me but York is where I want to be.

"I think we've got a good squad and I want to be part of driving the club forward."

Having made an unsuccessful return to Adams Park with the Minstermen last term, McCoy is also determined to leave Buckinghamshire in a more buoyant mood this weekend than he did following January's 1-0 defeat.

"I always enjoy going back to Wycombe and I've got a lot of good friends there," McCoy said. "I finished empty-handed there last time, so want three points tomorrow and, then, I'll be a happy boy.

"It's a good game for me to be involved in and, if I am, I will give 100 per cent but, if I'm not, I will cheer on the boys who are playing. They will be hungry, as they always are.

"They just missed out on promotion so you would expect them to come out all guns blazing but so will we. We finished last season at the wrong end of the table.

"We know that and know we are better than that as players so, hopefully, it will be a good game and we can come out on top."

McCoy, who received no game time for City during the final seven weeks of last season, reckons he benefitted, meanwhile, from international duty with Antigua & Barbuda in June when his country thrillingly squeezed past World Cup second qualifying round by over-turning a two-goal, second leg deficit with goals in the 85th, 93rd and 95th minutes.

"I didn't have much of a break this summer but I think the internationals helped keep me ticking over," McCoy reasoned. "I think I needed this off-season to maintain a level of fitness and to work at my game to come back firing.

"Playing football is the best thing for staying sharp and, hopefully, that can carry me through the rest of the season. It's also always really good to play for your country and win, especially in the manner we did.

"If we get past Guatemala in the next round of games, then it's countries like USA and Jamaica in the main group. We got to that stage the last time and we would look forward to that again because it's always good to play against top players."

That two-legged Guatemala contest would be played on September 4 and 8, meaning McCoy would be unavailable for City's trip to Newport in between and, possibly, the following weekend's match at Stevenage if called up.

He has hinted, though, that he could put club before country if needed by the Minstermen.

"York is my club and my bread and butter, so we'll see how things pan out and the season starts," McCoy explained. "Hopefully, we'll get off to a good one and take things from there."

McCoy went on to insist that he is not concerned by the manner in which City ended their friendly schedule with a 2-0 defeat at Halifax and reckons the club can set their sights higher than last term's 18th-place finish, saying: "Overall, we did really well in pre-season and I'd rather the blips we had came then than during the season.

"We're just concentrating on Wycombe now. I'm an ambitious person and one of the main reasons I came here in the first place was this is an ambitious club who had done well the season before.

"We had a bad season last season and under-achieved but I believe in this season's squad and I think we can definitely finish in the top half of the table and push for the play-offs. That's what I want to do and I know a lot of the lads and the management feel the same way.

"We won't be getting too carried away and will just keep trying to tally up the points after every game and see where we end up."
