YORK CITY boss Russ Wilcox praised the “attitude and application” of Marvin McCoy after the defender grabbed the equaliser in the Minstermen’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

The defender was transfer-listed at the end of last season, along with Femi Ilesanmi and Lindon Meikle, but has dug in at Bootham Crescent and finished Anthony Straker’s cross with ten minutes left to give Wilcox’s side a share of the spoils.

Standing in the centre of the six-yard area, McCoy was in an advanced position and Wilcox said: “Playing in the wing-back role instead of the full-back role, it allows him to do that. We asked at half-time ‘can you get further forward up the pitch’ but it has to start with the first pass.

“Luke (Summerfield) has got that pass in his locker and (Anthony) Straker has done well and Marvin has finished. I think that must be his first goal for York City. I know it’s only a pre-season game but that will give him a lift.

“I have spoken to the two lads the other day – Femi and Marvin – about how pleased I am with them, with their attitude and their application.

“If you do things right you can’t lose. You either get in my team or someone comes and puts you in theirs so I am really pleased with those two and really pleased for Marvin to get the goal.”

Wilcox ran the rule over 21-year-old trialist Reece Thompson, who is training with the club this week and came on as a second-half substitute.

Thompson scored 16 goals in 32 appearances last season for Evo-Stik Premier outfit Frickley Athletic.

He has joined Danny Johnson as forwards Wilcox is looking at and, asked what he could say about the two, Wilcox added: “It just opens it up to other clubs. We are having a look. We are not going to hide away from the fact we are looking for that other striker.

“I thought Johnson at times did well. The link-up play was good. It has been very difficult for him playing against two Championship teams.

“It will be interesting to have a look at him against lesser opposition. The lad from Frickley is different. He stretches teams and runs in behind so wait and see.”
