YORK City boss Russ Wilcox is hoping that a little Munich magic can rub off on his players in their new kit.

The Minstermen boss has likened the predominantly red strip, with a blue sash across the shirt, to the latest design adopted by five-time European champions Bayern.

It should also be popular with City fans with navy blue reincorporated for the first time since 2010.

Commenting on the Bavarian likeness, impressed City chief Russ Wilcox said: "I love the new kit. I really do.

"It was influenced a little by last season when we had a few away games playing in all red and I liked it. I had a weekend in Munich last month and saw that Bayern have changed to all red as well and I think it looks smart.

"With the blue sash, we're also going back to traditional club colours and I think the shirt will be popular. It's great to put the two colours together again for the last season at Bootham Crescent.

"I like it, the lads like it and I just hope we can get some wins in it."

City will wear the strip for the first time during tomorrow's home friendly match against Middlesbrough and it will go on sale later in pre-season.

Commenting at the annual photo call, Wilcox also praised the much-improved condition of Bootham Crescent's playing surface, arguing it would be conducive to a more attractive brand of football after the team scored fewer home goals last season than in any other campaign during the club's history.

"(Groundsman) Chris (Stirk) and his staff have done a terrific job. We had a few issues last season but they have been addressed and it's looking in great condition and that will help us.

"The bottom line is you need to find a way to win games first and foremost and, when people ask me what my philosophy is, it's simply to win games but you hope to do that with style too. We certainly need to be more entertaining at home than we were last season and are looking to do that with the recruitment we made over the summer."

Elsewhere, in Sky Bet League Two Luton have signed former Derby County defender Mark O'Brien and Barnet have recruited striker Shaun Batt from Leyton Orient.

Accrington Stanley have also agreed a six-month loan deal with Championship Huddersfield for defender Joe Wright.
