TRANSFER-LISTED full-backs Marvin McCoy and Femi Ilesanmi can still force their way into the York City reckoning following their impressive performances during the club's pre-season testing day, according to manager Russ Wilcox.

Both players were the last men standing from their respective bleep test groups, with Ilesanmi pushed all the way by youth-team prospect Ben Godfrey and new signing James Berrett pipped by McCoy, who has been on international duty with Antigua & Barbuda during the close season.

McCoy and Ilesanmi, along with Lindon Meikle and Jason Mooney, remain free to leave Bootham Crescent.

But Wilcox admitted that the physical condition of McCoy and Ilesanmi, in particular, impressed him as the squad were put through their paces by the running programme at Wigginton Road yesterday.

The City boss said: "Just because Marvin and Femi are on the list, it doesn't mean their York City careers are over and, if they show me that type of attitude and application, then they will be back in the squad and, who knows in football, things change daily. I was pleased with those two and delighted with the whole group as well."

Wilcox added that every player had met the required fitness benchmark at the Minstermen's training base, enthusing: "I'm delighted with how the players have come back.

"They're in tip-top condition and ready to go, which gives us the chance to put a plan together for pre-season. You always have your ideas but, unless the lads are at a certain level, you can't carry them out.

"We know we can do now and put together a structure for July 1, aimed at getting the lads as fit as possible. Some of the results of the test were outstanding and they were all very positive.

"Every one of them met the standard I was looking for. We've got some good athletes in the squad and it's pleasing to see that everybody has looked after themselves over the break.

"That's why we do this testing day a week early - to keep them on their toes during the off season. If anybody had been below standard, then their pre-season would have started from today but everybody will now be off until Wednesday when the hard work begins."

Wilcox went on to express his pleasure at the players' team spirit, which was cited at the end of last season as a key factor in the side successfully staving off the threat of relegation

"It was good to be a group again," he explained. "It's great to get away for the summer but it's always nice to see the lads ready to go and together again enjoying the banter."

City's pre-season fixture at Harrogate, meanwhile, has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 25, having been previously arranged for Tuesday, July 28.
