SHEFFIELD Wednesday will honour an agreement made by sacked boss Stuart Gray to visit York City in pre-season on Saturday, July 18.

The Minstermen have received confirmation that the game will go ahead, meaning the South Yorkshire Championship outfit will play at Bootham Crescent for a second successive summer.

City chief Russ Wilcox, who was Owls assistant manager from 2006 to 2009, is also hoping that his old club will bring a big contingent of supporters for the 3pm kick off.

He said: "It's another great fixture for us and I am pleased they are still honouring the game because it was arranged when Stuart Gray was manager. It should be a good game and, having worked there, I would expect them to bring 2,000 supporters, as they did for last summer's friendly."

Wilcox has also confirmed that a City XI will visit Harrogate Town on Tuesday, July 28 - the night before the first team play host to Premier League Newcastle.

Two different teams will be fielded in the back-to-back fixtures, as will be the case when Leeds visit 24 hours after the July 14 friendly at Darlington.

"We will be putting two different sides out on those nights because I don't want seven people sat on the bench and the lads are fit enough these days to be playing full matches in pre-season," Wilcox explained. "There will be youth-team players involved in the games at Darlington and Harrogate.

"There might be trialists too but that could depend on the four transfer-listed players moving on."

City are hoping to complete their pre-season schedule with a match on Saturday, July 25.

"We've been let down by the opponents we wanted to play that afternoon and are looking to find somebody else to play," Wilcox added.

The Minstermen's current pre-season schedule is: Saturday, July 11- Middlesbrough (home, 12noon); Tuesday, July 14 Darlington 1883 (away, 7pm); Wednesday, July 15 - Leeds United (home, 7pm); Saturday, July 18 - Sheffield Wednesday (home, 3pm); Tuesday, July 28 - Harrogate Town (away, 7.45pm); Wednesday, July 29 - Newcastle (home, 7.45pm); Saturday, August 1 - FC Halifax Town (away, 3pm).

City's Capital One Cup home clash with Bradford, meanwhile, has been confirmed for Tuesday, August 11 (kick-off 7.45pm).

Admission will be £15 to sit or stand in all three home sections of the ground with concessions £10.

Details of when the tickets will go on sale are yet to be released.

Elsewhere, City's Sky Bet League Two rivals Portsmouth have signed Chesterfield winger Gary Roberts on a three-year deal.

Relegated Yeovil have also made their first two summer signings - midfielders Matt Dolan and Jack Compton arriving from Bradford and Hartlepool respectively.

The Minstermen's opening day hosts Wycombe have swooped twice too, adding Notts County striker Garry Thompson and left-sided Bolton youngster Ryan Sellers to their squad.

Other transfers have seen Notts County recruit midfielder Rob Milsom from Rotherham, goalkeeper Trevor Carson swap Cheltenham for Hartlepool and Luke Berry rejoin Cambridge after a spell at Barnsley.
