YORK CITY will meet 2013 finalists Bradford City in the Capital One Cup first round.

The Minstermen, one of 36 unseeded teams in the draw, will play the Bantams at Bootham Crescent in the week beginning August 10.

It will bring a return to York for former defender James Meredith. The League One outfit reached the competition's showpiece final at Wembley two years ago, falling 5-0 to Swansea City.

City boss Russ Wilcox said: "I am delighted. I think, first and foremost, you would like a home draw and we have got that.

"It's against Bradford City, who are just down the road and they will bring plenty of support. It is all set up to be a cracking night."

York, meawhile, have lost nine consecutive first-round ties in the League Cup's various different guises since enjoying a 3-2 aggregate triumph over Port Vale in 1997.

Future City management duo Martin Foyle and Andy Porter featured for the opposition during those games, as did ex-winger Jon McCarthy and Paul Musselwhite, who later became player/goalkeeper coach at Bootham Crescent.

City's marksmen over the two legs were Gary Bull, Steve Bushell and Tony Barrass but the club were dumped out 4-1 at Oxford in the next round.

Since then, the Minstermen have succumbed to Sunderland, Wigan, Stoke, Crewe, Sheffield United, Rotherham, Doncaster (twice) and Burnley.

That last victory against Port Vale, meanwhile, had been preceded by giant-killing shocks over Everton and Manchester United during the previous two campaigns.
