YORK City have agreed terms with a midfielder who is expected to join the club next week subject to a medical.

Bootham Crescent boss Russ Wilcox does not want to reveal the identity of the player until pen is put to paper but has given assurances of his pedigree.

The City chief said: "He's somebody who has played League One football all his career and won under-21 caps for his country.

"He has agreed to sign for us but is on holiday at the moment and I don't want to say anything else until the deal has gone through, just in case anything happens."

Wilcox is also understood to be in talks with a striker, although his summer recruitment drive remains restricted while transfer-listed quartet Femi Ilesanmi, Marvin McCoy, Lindon Meikle and Jason Mooney are on the club's books.

Elsewhere, City's Sky Bet League Two rivals Portsmouth have snapped up released Aston Villa left-back Enda Stevens, who spent last season on loan at Doncaster.

Craig Westcarr, meanwhile, has swapped Pompey for Mansfield and defender Elliot Omozusi has switched from Leyton Orient to Cambridge.

New Stevenage boss Teddy Sheringham has also made Aldershot forward Brett Williams his first signing.
