FORMER Scunthorpe assistant manager John Schofield has been reunited with Russ Wilcox as York City's new number two.

The pair, who guided the Iron to promotion from Sky Bet League Two a year ago, will be working together again next term at Bootham Crescent.

Schofield has left a similar position at Lincoln City to join forces with his old Doncaster Rovers playing colleague, having been impressed with the Minstermen's future aspirations.

He said: “I’m really excited about the opportunity of joining York City. It is a lovely family club and one thing which really struck me when I met the chairman and the other board members for the first time was their enthusiasm to take it forward.

“The chairman is a gentleman who wants to progress and realises if that is achieved through gradual steps then it will be maintained for years to come. He has got some great plans for the football club and there are exciting times ahead for York City.”

Schofield started out coaching at Lincoln in 1999 and, as manager, guided the club to the League Two play-offs in 2007 during his only full season in charge at Sincil Bank.

That campaign also witnessed the Imps' most league wins in a campaign for 24 years.

Since then, he has filled first-team coaching and assistant-manager positions at Walsall, Cheltenham, Cambridge, Notts County, Gillingham, Scunthorpe and, for a second time, Lincoln, where he has been employed since December.

He has been current Barnet chief Martin Allen's number two at three different clubs with the pair in charge during Gillingham's 2013 League Two title-winning season.

The Barnsley-born, 50-year-old received his UEFA B licence in 1998, completed his A licence two years later and obtained his Pro Licence seven years ago.

As a player, he entered the pro game late at 22, playing in midfield for the likes of Woolley Miners Welfare, Shepshed Charterhouse, Matlock Town and Gainsborough Trinity while working as a motor mechanic for South Yorkshire county council before making 542 appearances and scoring 26 goals at Football League level in a 13-year career that took in spells with Hull City, Mansfield, Doncaster and Lincoln.
