FANS celebrated around York as Jermain Defoe slotted in the only goal of the match in England’s game against Slovenia.

At the The Terrace pub in Stonebow, York, there were cries of “easy!” as Defoe scored in the 22nd minute.

Easy it wasn’t, but England are now through to the last 16.

Jamie Greig, of Hull Road, was one of those watching. He said: “It was absolutely amazing. We were shaky at the start but we composed ourselves, realised who we were playing and realised what was at stake. Rooney didn’t perform, but we were amazing. Come on England.

“We could go all the way. We were really together as a team, playing with no fear and there is nothing to stop us.”

Patrick Tibble, of Monkgate, sounded more cautious. He said: “The game was tight. We always had it, but it was close.”

North Yorkshire Police said there had been only five arrests in the county during the match, all in the Scarborough area.

How come the Terrace is always mentioned in the Press. Is this another business who the York Press have a "special" relationship with, like York Racecourse?

This World Cup is turning out just like World War Two. France surrendered early, the USA arrived at the last minute and we're left to fight the Germans again!

Not a historian then ? The Red Army beat the Germans, not the British Army and certainly not the English Army - even if it existed, which it didn't and hasn't since the seventeenth century.
