MITCHELL TRAVIS produced one of the biggest shocks in williamhill.com UK Championship history as he dumped world number six Marco Fu out of the tournament.

The amateur, one of seven brought in to help make up the numbers in the 128-man draw at the Barbican, was supposed to have no chance against the two-time ranking event winner. But the Sheffield youngster fought back from 2-0 and 5-4 behind to scalp Fu and produce one of the game’s greatest upsets.

The 21-year-old described playing at York as “a dream come true” and said he couldn’t conjure up the words to sum up his sensational victory.

“I am absolutely over the moon,” he said. “I didn’t have anything to lose. I was coming out here as a rank outsider. I was over the moon if I lost as long as I didn’t make myself look like a muppet.

“I went 2-0 down, went to the toilet and just had a little word to myself – to gee myself up, play my natural game and concentrate on one ball at a time. The venue is absolutely marvellous. Playing in the main arena was a dream come true. There’s only one better and that’s the Crucible.

“I will never forget this, ever.”

He added: “I played Marco in a PTC a couple of years ago and he beat me 4-2 and he told me to keep going. He said to me after this game ‘I hope you do well and thanks for a brilliant game’. I am really chuffed.

“My phone bill is going to be a bit high next month. Everyone in the phone book is going to get rung up – on holiday or not.”

“It’s obviously the biggest win of my life. I am going to tell everyone else to go home now,” he joked. “I’ve won it.”

Fu said: “I practised hard so there is no excuse. I felt pretty good, and physically I was up there, it’s just that technically I have been working on a few faults.

“I have been working with my coach but I’m still not very happy with my game. It was half expected that I would probably struggle a little bit in York but it is still a very surprising defeat for me.

“I lost a lot of close frames and I didn’t feel great among the balls so I was really struggling to score, which I rely a little bit on. It’s very disappointing.”

Asked whether it was one of the worst defeats of his career, he said: “Probably. I have had some good results this season and this was probably the one that I wasn’t really expecting. I didn’t expect to play great snooker but I didn’t expect to lose in the first round.”
