THE family Webber are keeping their fingers collectively crossed that Rob Webber – Pocklington’s most famous sporting son – will feature for England against fellow Six-Nations’ front-runners Wales next weekend.
Webber’s wait for an England cap came to an end in Rome when he went on as a replacement in the 74th minute of last week’s 19-15 win over Italy.
Now his delighted parents Mike and Gwen, who watched the match at their Laytham home – and brother Mat, who took in the game with his Pocklington team-mates after their scheduled game at Scarborough had been called off – are hoping he will make an appearance at Twickenham against the Welsh a week tomorrow.
Father Mike declared himself “immensely proud” of his son’s call to arms in Rome.
And after that match the newly-capped Webber told Pocklington RUFC president, Tim Slater – a spectator at the Stadio Olimpico alongside another Pock RUFC regular Richard Allen that he had been moved by all the goodwill messages he had received from people back in the town.
Webber added: “Thanks for the messages guys. Great away win and a very proud day for me.”
