POCKLINGTON found top form to record their second win of this North Premier campaign with a well-deserved 31-20 victory at Sandal.

In a season where points of all types have been hard to come by, they took their chances with aplomb to run in five touchdowns and wrap up a try bonus.

However, it was their lineout dominance and robust and reliable tackling that built the platform for success, putting a stranglehold on Sandal's efforts to get back on terms in the final quarter.

Sandal took the lead in the 10th minute, kicking to the corner and barrelling over for a converted try after Pock had squandered an earlier opportunity to take the lead, but Pock bounced straight back with skipper Tom Peters bursting clear from a lineout to close the gap.

The hosts took the lead when James Flint crossed after linking up with Jed Jackson following a Sandal clearance being run back by Christian Pollock, who also kicked the extras.

However, the game threatened to unravel for Pocklington when they were reduced to 13 with two players sin binned in quick succession and Sandal took advantage with another converted try.

Pinned on their own line and still with a two-man deficit, Pocklington defended with true grit - but once back up to full-strength, they lifted the siege and Jack Holbrough, playing as an emergency centre, feigned to a couple of dummy runners before releasing Archie Fothergill on his outside to steam over.

There was still time at the end of the half for Sandal to kick a penalty, leaving Pocklington with a slight lead at the interval.

In an end-to-end start to the second period, Sandal kicked another penalty to go a point ahead but Pock regained the lead as Holbrough was again instrumental as the fulcrum, bringing Billy Hardy on an angled run to blast through.

It was still anyone's game and Sandal kicked a penalty to the corner to set up for another drive for the line, but Pocklington's lineout craft saved the day with Fothergill snaffling the home throw at the front.

The pendulum again swung Sandal's way with 15 minutes remaining when Pollock became the third Pock man dispatched to the bin but, despite the numerical disadvantage, Pocklington had their tactics just right to prevent Sandal reeling in the six-point arrears.

Fly-half Matt Procter drilled a series of kicks into the bottom corner and outstanding tackling across the team, led by Flint, nailed all of Sandal's attempts to break out.

Pock then finished off their opponents in style, once again stealing a Sandal lineout, shipping the ball out smartly into midfield where restored fullback Pollock stepped through a gap and out of a tackle for the day's final score.
