SELBY RUFC want their Yorkshire One status secure by the full-time whistle tomorrow when they travel to Hullensians.

The Swans are six points clear of the relegation zone and one win away from guaranteed survival thanks to an upturn in form that has seen them collect two-thirds of wins for the season since the turn of the year.

Bottom sides Wheatley Hills and North Ribblesdale face tricky games at home to Beverley and Scarborough, respectively, tomorrow, before squaring up together for the final game of the season, meaning one team will likely finish with at least four points more than they have now.

And although 12th-placed Selby could be safe without earning another point, they do not want to leave their survival to chance – and if they don’t get their win at Hullensians, they will have to do it against seventh-placed Moortown.

In the reverse fixture against Hullensians, Selby contrived to throw away a 20-point lead in half an hour to lose 31-27.

First team forwards coach Jason Cicero said: “It’s been a tale of two seasons since Christmas. Our coach departed early and his role was filled by a member of the old guard, Steve Cruise.

“It’s somebody who has coached the club before and it was a case of the boys rallying around while we got them to play in the fashion we want.

“It’s paid dividends. We ran York close a couple of weeks back and should have taken the kick at the end. It’s a young side and it was maybe just a bit of immaturity there.

“We managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory last time we played Hullensians. But our last game of the season is against Moortown, so we are hoping it would be job done this weekend.

“Hullensians have a strong pack – they probably match us up front. We’ve got to make sure our tackling is A1 because they’re good ball-carriers and we’ve got to stop them playing and going forward by tackling before the game line.

“Then hopefully, going forward, we’ve sufficient skill. There will probably be a lot around driving mauls.

“They’re not playing for anything but they’ll want to finish on a high. It’ll be a tight affair and hopefully the relegation battle will spur us on.

“Hopefully we’ll be starting with the team that took us to victory over Old Rishworthians. Our skipper, Brendan Lanaghan, took a knock but he’s been passed fit.”

Table-toppers York are one win away from securing the title and promotion to North One East after winning 38-22 at Old Brodleians.

Tomorrow they host third-placed Heath, who are one of only two teams that could catch the Clifton Park side.

North Premier’s relegated Pocklington will be playing North One East rugby next season following 53-10 defeat at home to Billingham. Tomorrow, Pock visit Sandal.

Malton & Norton guaranteed North One East survival with a 29-23 win over leaders Alnwick. Tomorrow they travel to Dinnington.

Spokesman Bill Laidler said: “With three games left Malton can now relax and play with the freedom they showed in this game, starting on Saturday.”

York RI travel to Halifax in Yorkshire Four Shield tomorrow. RI lost 21-17 to Thirsk last week while fourth-placed Halifax lost 19-10 to Hessle last time out.
