MALTON & Norton return to action on tomorrow looking for revenge – and a further boost to their survival hopes.

Malt host Driffield in North One East needing the points to climb further away from danger and also avenge two narrow away defeats to their East Yorkshire rivals earlier this season, 25-22 in the league in November and 22-18 in the Yorkshire Cup.

They will be underdogs, with Driffield lying third and in the promotion race whereas Malt sit seventh and still wary of being dragged into a relegation scrap, with the positions unchanged after last weekend's wintry weather wiped out all fixtures.

But spokesman Bill Laidler, hoping home advantage will help, said: "We're in with a chance.

"In the last couple of games we've played very well. Before that we were playing quite well but without getting the results. We'd earlier had a bad spell in which we were poor, but we've picked up now."

Indeed, Malt's resurgence in this second half of the season has been helped, in part, by strong form at the Gannock which has seen them pick up 14 points from their last three fixtures.

Having slipped into the relegation scrap after seven straight defeats, Malt have seen off Morpeth, Dinnington and Bradford & Bingley to lift themselves to the top of the pack of eight clubs vying to avoid the drop.

Laidler attributes that upturn in form to the return of several players from injury, not least prop forward Liam Vaughan, who had been missing through work commitments and a knee problem.

"He's back firing," said Laidler. "It's more for his leadership. He's made a difference.

"We've got virtually everybody back so will be picking from strength."

North Premier bottom side Pocklington play host to fourth-placed Lymm tomorrow. Both sides suffered home defeats last time out, with Lymm going down 20-13 to Hull and Pock being upended 17-10 by Kirkby Lonsdale.

Pock are five points adrift of second-bottom Birkenhead Park who have played one game fewer while Lymm are looking upwards, five points off second-placed Harrogate who face runaway leaders Preston Grasshoppers.

In November, Lymm ran out 66-0 home winners the last time these sides squared up.

Yorkshire One table-toppers and newly-crowned RFU Intermediate Cup northern champions York return to league action tomorrow with a trip to second-bottom Selby.

The reverse fixture ended with a 65-12 win for York who have been in irresistible form this season and, despite falling two games behind their closest league rivals owing to cup duties, remain five points clear at the summit.

Selby's fortunes have been a little different, although their results have improved since the turn of the year, with three of their four league wins coming in 2018 - including a home win over promotion-hopefuls Heath.

York beat Manchester side Bowdon 25-11 a fortnight ago while Selby were 28-18 home winners over North Ribblesdale the week before that.

York RI are set to host Yorkshire Shield's fourth-placed side Halifax. The sides are separated by a position and two points, although third-placed RI have a game in hand.

The sides met in the Yorkshire Vase last September when RI, reduced to 14 men by injury, ran hosts Halifax close but lost out 23-17.

RI went down 32-17 at leaders Bramley Phoenix in their last fixture while Halifax were 35-3 victors at home to strugglers Sheffield Oaks.
