NESTLE Rowntree RUFC not only maintained their 100 per cent record in the Yorkshire Northern Merit League One this term but also completed a first double over any York side in many a year.

Trees travelled up the road to take on cross-city rivals York 3rds and won 15-7, a late try from Jack Gabbatiss sealing the derby success.

York 3rds began the game strongly but gradually Trees got going and, after 15 minutes, Jack Daniels converted a penalty to give them the lead.

The rest of the half was an evenly contested affair in an exciting game, albeit without further scores.

The second period seemed to open up a bit, with York's speedy full-back going in at the corner to put them ahead, the excellent conversion making it 7-3.

But Nestle stormed back and, after refusing to take two easy penalty shots at goal, they were rewarded when centre Morgan Cames came inside to support another ruck and sneaked in under the posts, Daniels adding the extras.

Time thereafter ticked by with both sides unable to find a way through some tight defence, until a catch and drive from a lineout saw Gabbatiss crash over with five minutes left to give Trees their hard-fought success.

It made it 12 wins from 12 and left them on 56 points, top of the table by 12 from second-placed Moortown 3rds Marauders. York 3rds are seventh with five wins and four defeats.
