YORKSHIRE One rugby leaders York RUFC head coach Lee Denham is “over the moon” with his young players, as the Clifton Park side go from strength to strength this season.

Last week’s 19-0 win at Bradford Salem was York’s 11th of the league campaign, and their 12th straight victory of the campaign.

Tomorrow, they take on Old Brodleians at home – the side that put an end to their winning run after the opening nine games of the 1982/83 season.

Victory in this fixture will see them better the club record for consecutive wins that was set in the 1984/85 season, eventually halted at Doncaster.

And Denham, dismissing any notion of history repeating itself, is understandably positive about his team’s chances, saying: “It’s going to be another difficult game.

“But if we turn up, play our shape and keep up our aggression, we can win.”

This season, York have fielded sides this season with a range of age and experience – from veteran outside centre Sam Potrykus, who has made the third highest number of appearances for York, to the teenagers Tom Williams and Lewi Jackson.

Denham has given a glowing report of the younger team members’ contributions, hinting that it is made all the more satisfying as they have come through the youth sides at the club.

He said: “I’m over the moon with the young lads.

“The way they’ve taken to training, bought into the style of play and adapted to the aggression and the hits of the first team.”

York will field a similar side to last week. Both Darren Rutherford and Tom Williams come back into the squad, but Lewis Hannibal’s broken thumb will keep him out and Toby Atkin will be rested after taking a heavy hit to his shoulder in Bradford.

Meanwhile, Selby are languishing at the bottom of the table, having most recently lost 49-32 at home to Middlesbrough.

They visit ninth-placed Old Rishworthians tomorrow, whose 27-7 win at Keighley last time out was their first in six attempts.

Pocklington suffered the disappointment of a late loss last week, with North Premier’s bottom side Morley scoring a last-gasp penalty to clinch a 20-18 scoreline.

Tomorrow, Pock meet a side in good form – they travel to fifth-placed Billingham, who have won their last six games on the trot, including a commanding 64-3 home win over Kirkby Lonsdale in their most recent outing.

Malton & Norton were beaten by North One East mid-table rivals Cleckheaton 41-24 last week, but are still looking up the table, as they are three points off sixth and five ahead of Bradford & Bingley in ninth.

Tomorrow, they travel to fifth-placed Alnwick, who have won all but one of their last eight fixtures.

York RI do not play again until Saturday, December 9, when they host Hessle, the side that sit one place and three points above them.

Last week, RI fell to a 38-14 loss at second-placed Mosborough.
