A LATE Chris Jones penalty earned York RI RUFC a thrilling 25-24 win at Yorkshire Four South East leaders Rotherham Phoenix.
It brought just reward at the end of a standout performance and lifted RI up to fourth position.
During a high-intensity start, Rotherham forced RI into conceding a number of soft penalties, one of which gave them the first points.
RI came back strongly from the restart, and Tim Lewis got their first try following strong carrying from man-of-the-match Adam Osguthorpe. Jones converted.
The hosts scored next following a period of sustained pressure – RI held firm against multiple line breaks, but Rotherham broke through with a well-worked forward drive.
Rob Joy equalised with the final play of the half, RI moving the ball out wide following a slick set play.
The visitors started the second half with a clear edge, and stoic carries from Dan Coates forced a penalty on Rotherham’s 10-metre line. Jones took the three points.
Jones then crossed and converted to extend the lead as a loose Rotherham kick was returned and recycled smartly.
As Rotherham again began to apply heavy pressure, RI’s Ali Jordan received a yellow card, and the hosts capitalised, crossing twice to take a two-point lead going into the final 15 minutes.
Tempers were fraying within the home ranks, however, and their flanker was shown red for throwing punches.
RI were the next to make the most of the man advantage, establishing field position and forcing a penalty within range. Jones scored the testing kick.
