IN-FORM Nestle Rowntree RUFC finally got one over on neighbours and nemeses York 3rds thanks to a terrific 24-10 win.

York seemed to be maintaining their recent stranglehold in these match-ups as they began in the ascendancy, but Trees gradually got on top and duly maintained their super start to the Yorkshire Merit League northern division season - making it eight wins from eight outings this term.

York put Trees under pressure from the kick-off and soon booted a penalty to take a 3-0 lead.

But Trees' defence held firm when faced with more pressure and they gradually came back in the game, scoring an equalising penalty through Jack Daniels after 25 minutes.

From the restart, Trees charged forward and, from a maul following a lineout, Jack Gabbatiss was on hand to crash over for an uncovered try.

The second half saw York again start on top and a good move brought a converted try and an 10-8 lead.

Again it took Nestle a while to get going but, when their pack began to dominate, replacement wing-forward Alex Robertshaw scored a good try out wide on 55 minutes.

With York's defence now under pressure, Trees won two penalties both converted by Daniels to leave them in line for victory.

And the rare success over their bogey team was sealed five minutes from time when Gabbatiss again charged forward to score in the corner.

Trees then became over-eager to score a bonus-point fourth try, with a couple of chances going begging at the end of an entertaining game.
