YORK demolished Yorkshire One joint-leaders Scarborough 56-7 to move clear at the top of the table.

Shane Goulding and Gaz Singleton both touched down twice with Will Atkin, Jon Dawes, Liam Hessay and Luke Stockton also claiming tries in the Clifton Park clash.

The rest of the points were kicked by Dawes, as York maintained their 100 per cent record with four fixtures played ahead of this weekend’s trip to Middlesbrough.

After opening exchanges that were scrappy with the greasy ball difficult to control, York eventually managed to put several phases of play together, which resulted in a penalty for not rolling away that Dawes converted from 35 metres on nine minutes.

Possession then changed hands on numerous occasions until Scarborough gained some ball control, winning a penalty 20 metres out with a quick tap-and-go leading to another penalty and a yellow card for Josh Parker.

Scarborough went on to take a scrum and then tried to run the ball through their backs only to knock on and allow York to clear.

Moments later, powerful ball carrying from Chris Fox and Goulding moved York forward, winning a penalty which Hessay kicked to touch and, from the line-out, Atkin jinked his way through the Scarborough defence to score from 30 metres, with Dawes adding the conversion.

York began to gain control from then on, as the back row punched holes in the visitors’ defence and the rain stopped, making the ball easier to control.

The hosts secured another penalty which Dawes dispatched, although Scarborough were unfortunate not to score before the half-time whistle.

York started the second half strongly and a flowing move from the backs looked to have put George Davies in, but for an excellent covering tackle from the Scarborough wing.

But an away scrum five metres out also resulted in York pushing the coastal team back, with Goulding touching down, although the conversion was missed.

Continuing to attack with forward dominance, York won another penalty on 53 minutes and took a scrum, with a powerful drive giving Goulding a simple score, only for Dawes’ conversion to hit the post.

Straight from the restart, Goulding set off on a powerful run and passed to Dawes, who went in under the posts and secured the conversion.

Just seconds later, Joe Maud collected the ball and ran straight at the Scarborough defence, committing several defenders before passing to Chris Peace who moved the ball on to the supporting Hessay to score, with Dawes adding the extras.

York were now in full flow, as the forwards created a strong platform, allowing Atkin and Hessay to release the backs with accurate passing through Peace and Sam Forbes.

On 65 minutes, the latter two combined to put Singleton in with Dawes kicking an excellent conversion from the touch-line.

Scarborough responded with some excellent passing by their backs that allowed them to score under the posts before adding the conversion.

But the home side were back on top swiftly, with quick ball allowing Hessay to spread the play wide for Singleton to score.

From the kick off, the scoring was completed as the excellent Stockton set off on a powerful run to cross the line, with Dawes converting.

Second-bottom Selby suffered a fourth straight defeat, going down 33-26 to Bradford Salem.
