YORK RI Ladies' Kirsty Parr has been shortlisted for a national rugby union award.

The prop forward is in the running for the Women's Player of The Year gong at the Crabbies National Rugby Awards, having made the cut from more than 1,000 nominees.

These awards celebrate grassroots rugby union, with the winners to be announced at a glittering event at Twickenham on August 30.

Parr said: "I had no idea I'd even been nominated, who nominated me, or their reasons why - but thank you! If you would like to own up feel free!

"I love rugby, I love my team and I wouldn't be in this position without every other player on that pitch so thank you to all of my fellow players."

She will be up against Ellie Rodgers (Sudbury), Alix Taylor (Barnsley), Ailish Clear (Harrogate Ladies) and Laura McGillivray (Royston).

Parr's York RI team won the Women’s NC North Two East title this year.

An RI club statement said: "We are hugely proud to hear that Kirsty was named as a finalist for the Women's Player of the Year 2017. This year the expert panel had an especially difficult task as there were over 1,000 nominees, all with justifiable claims for a prize."
