YORK RUFC are relaunching the club's Cavaliers team in a bid to promote social rugby.

Although York has a proud tradition of rugby at Clifton Park, player numbers have dropped in recent seasons.

But a new look team is being launched for the coming 2017-18 season which aims to play in the Yorkshire Central Merit Table against similar teams from around the area.

Captain Chris Clegg said: "The Cavaliers have a great tradition of social and veterans’ rugby but we have lacked the numbers we need recently. We want to rebuild and once again make the 'Cavs' the team in which players of all ages and abilities can come together and have fun playing the great game of rugby union!"

With friendly fixtures most weekends starting in late September, the Cavs will also enter local veterans’ tournaments to give the season a competitive element.

Clegg added: "Rugby is a great way to keep fit and there is a place for everyone on the pitch. The facilities at Clifton Sports Club are second to none with 20 acres of pitches and a welcoming club house for players and their families. With plenty of 'socials' organised, we will be as active off the pitch as on it and partners and kids will be very welcome too."
