SELBY will take their fight for Yorkshire One survival to the final weekend of the season for a second successive year.

The Sandhill Lane outfit produced their best display of the season to secure a 41-27 bonus-point home victory over Heath with Duncan Hardy, Danny Wilkinson, Alex Webster, James Fox, Ashley Parkinson and Harry Cruise all contributing tries.

As a consequence, Selby moved out of the bottom two, courtesy of having a better points’ difference to Yarnbury, who claimed a couple of bonus points in their loss against Beverley.

North Ribblesdale, meanwhile, were well beaten at Bridlington and are now just one point better off than Selby, going into the final programme of fixtures a week on Saturday.

That weekend will see Selby face a tricky fixture at Scarborough, while Yarnbury travel to mid-table Keighley and Ribblesdale host a West Leeds team looking to secure their play-off berth.

Against Heath, Selby took the lead on seven minutes when excellent inter-passing by forwards and backs resulted in a 12th try of the season for prop-forward Duncan Hardy, which full back Scott Hunt was unable to convert.

But, on the quarter-hour mark, Heath winger Luke Saltonstall scored under the posts and Ezra Hinchliffe kicked the simple conversion to give the visitors a 7-5 lead.

Selby stormed back and centre Webster nearly went over for a try down the right before the ball was re-cycled to the opposite flank, where prop-forward Ben Booth put scrum-half Wilkinson over the line on 18 minutes.

Hunt kicked an excellent conversion from wide out on the left to put the hosts back in front 12-7 and a superb solo effort by Webster, converted by Hunt, extended that lead.

Excellent work by centres Andrew Kehoe and Webster then totally outsmarted the Heath defence, providing the platform for Selby’s fourth and bonus-point try for fly-half Fox, who dived in under the posts.

A Heath penalty reduced the arrears, but Selby added to their score in the third minute of first-half, added-on time after more excellent work in the backs put flanker Parkinson in under the posts for his first try of the season.

Hunt converted easily to give the home side a 33-10 lead at the interval.

The second half started badly for the relegation fighters with Richard Brown claiming a try for the visitors after Josh Booth had been yellow carded and penalised.

Despite being down to 14, Selby’s replacement winger Cruise scrambled over the line after the referee played advantage for a high tackle, although Hunt was unable to add the conversion.

Selby were also only briefly restored to full-strength when skipper Duncan Hardy was yellow carded just four minutes after Booth was beckoned back on.

Brown subsequently went on to drive over for his second Heath try from a five-metre scrum and Hinchliffe added the conversion.

But, despite their numerical disadvantage, Selby again got back on the scoresheet as Cruise, with Hunt off the field, kicked a 30-metre penalty.

In the third minute of added-on time, Heath had the final say when centre Eddie Cartwright touched down for his side’s bonus-point try, which was unconverted.
