A POWERFUL second quarter display which brought three converted tries in ten minutes took Pocklington to a convincing 33-3 home win over Durham City.

And it was a memorable afternoon for teenager Matt Procter who stole the show with four conversions and a man of the match display.

The Pocklington fly half, still only 18, was in direct opposition to his one-time school coach and mentor Mark Bedworth, the former York St John, Wharfedale, Barbarians, and England Counties No 10.

Durham are one of only four sides to have beaten Pocklington this season and had the better of the opening exchanges, hitting the woodwork with a drop goal before taking the lead from a penalty.

Pocklington’s early attacks saw them invariably penalised or giving away possession but things finally came together in the 23rd minute when they won a lineout in the corner and wrestled the ball in-field for prop Chris Morton to plunge over next to the posts, Procter converting.

Pocklington went back on the offensive and scrum half and skipper Ben Rees bamboozled the defence with a midfield dummy to charge 30 yards under the bar, Procter again converted.

Pocklington surged into a 21-3 lead with the best try of the day. The back row led a series of forward charges down the left flank to within a yard of the line where slick handling from the backs sent winger Josh Britton waltzing in on the overlap, Procter kicked his third conversion.

The ploy was repeated early in the second period as the pack softened Durham up in the middle. More quick hands gave Britton space to ride a tackle and make a one-handed touchdown at full stretch. Procter’s touchline conversion came back off the post.

Pocklington took their foot off the gas but defended impressively as Durham pressed throughout the final quarter. Durham pounded at the home line but Pocklington were determined not to let them through. Procter and replacement scrum half David Davison knocked down some of Durham’s biggest men.

Pocklington’s defensive commitment led to a fifth try as Durham ran out of ideas in sight of the home line.

Another big hit dislodged the ball and Britton, now at flanker, fed centre Joe Holbrough who had an unopposed 70 yard stroll to the line. Procter converted.

Second place West Hartlepool also won at home to Penrith but failed to get a try bonus point enabling Pocklington’s five-try victory to edge them a further point clear at the top of the North One East table.
