HULLENSIANS scored three tries in the opening quarter of the game to condemn Selby to a sixth consecutive defeat in Yorkshire One.

On a heavy pitch, visitors Selby were under pressure from the first kick as the home side dominated possession.

With only six minutes gone, Selby fell behind when Hullensians attacked down the right before moving the ball smartly across field for winger Josh Langford to score in the corner.

Selby spurned a penalty kick awarded for offside but any respite was short lived as Hullensians continued to enjoy the lion's share of possession.

Langford extended his side's advantage after 14 minutes - benefitting from excellent handling from his fellow three quarters to touch down for the second time. Fly-half Lewis Baldwin struck his first successful kick of the afternoon to open up a 12 point lead.

Things went from bad to worse for Selby as the re-start failed to travel ten metres and possession was immediately lost from the resulting scrum.

Winger Isaac Norman showed his pace and raced in for the third try of the afternoon with just 16 minutes gone.

Baldwin's conversion failed to hit the target but things looked ominous for the visitors with over an hour to play.

To their credit, Selby refused to lie down and slowly began to force their way back into the match. Unfortunately, their play lacked the clinical edge and a couple of promising moves failed to produce a much-needed score.

The pressure eventually told after 35 minutes when Selby opened their account. A kick out of defence was charged down and the ball fell favourably for Selby. Fly-half Josh Cruise spotted a gap behind the defence, chipped through and won the race to the line before converting to reduce the deficit to 17-7 at the interval.

The second half saw both sides trying to seize the initiative but worsening weather conditions and unforced errors combined to restrict scoring opportunities.

Repeated infringements at the breakdown by home forwards eventually presented Cruise with the chance to reduce the gap to just seven points. His successful penalty kick on 68 minutes gave Selby hope of, at least, another losing bonus point but that was dashed when they conceded a penalty for not releasing the ball in contact from a kick-off and Baldwin re-established Hullensian's ten point advantage.

Selby threw everything they had into the final ten minutes of the game but Hullensians clung on to their lead and ran out deserved 20-10 winners.

With surprising wins for both Acklam and Heath, Selby dropped a place to 11th in the table - just six points above bottom club Yarnbury.

With difficult fixtures on the horizon against York and league leaders Bridlington, they face a real test of character and steel over the Christmas and New Year period.
