YORK RI salvaged a losing bonus point thanks to two long-range penalties as they were beaten 22-16 in a closely-contested clash at Bramley Phoenix.

RI remained seventh in the Yorkshire Four table, while Bramley stayed bottom despite the win - albeit only because of a sizeable points deduction. Their record of six wins from ten would otherwise have them in the upper reaches.

RI were under the cosh from the off, conceding a try in the opening 60 seconds as the Bramley full-back put in a speculative kick and, amid driving sleet, followed up to beat the visitors to the touchdown.

To make matters worse, RI lost a scrum against the head and Bramley spun the ball wide for another try and 10-0 interval lead.

The visitors then started to get on top and, when Chris Jones tackled a home forward so hard that the ball was dislodged, Jones picked up and scored a fine try to cut the gap.

However, Bramley hit back to make it 15-5 and, although Jones replied with a second try, the hosts crossed again, and converted, to lead 22-10.

RI, for whom Jones and Francky Rossi were outstanding, dug deep and Tom Armes’ two penalties at least brought some consolation.
