TEENAGER Jonty Peters held his nerve to get Pocklington RUFC back on track in North One East - kicking a brilliant penalty with four minutes left to give them an excellent 22-20 home win over second-placed Alnwick.

Pocklington worked hard for victory against a committed Alnwick defence and they camped in visiting territory battering at their opponents for long periods.

But their endeavour was almost undone by a terrible start to the second half which let the Northumberland side in for two tries in five minutes to grab the lead.

However, Pock kept plugging away, and when Alnwick were penalised for holding on late in the day, up stepped 17-year old Peters, who sent the winning kick sailing between the posts from 38 metres wide out on the right and straight into the breeze.

The victory kept them fourth, now just two points off runners-up spot. West Hartlepool remain clear out in front.

Pocklington had looked into control for most of the first half. They fell behind to an early penalty but soon equalised through Peters. Pock’s pack then got the ball and kept it, with offloading sending hooker Dave Birch striding through to score.

Pock then laid siege to the Alnwick line. Five times they were hauled down inches short, and wing Josh Britton was held up over the whitewash.

But they came again and when Joe Holbrough was stopped a yard out, half-back partner Ben Rees picked up and dabbed the ball over the line.

The sides swapped penalties and at 16-6 Pocklington went into the interval in good heart.

That quickly dissipated as Alwick notched two converted tries, incisive back play catching the defence napping.

But Pock regained their composure with evergreen prop John-Paul Kelly leading a massive forward effort.

Peters closed the gap to a point with his third penalty, but with Pock getting no change out of Alnwick’s midfield defence the game was slipping away - until the young wing snatched victory.
