POCKLINGTON RUFC fell 14-10 at Dinnington after leading for much of the North One East game.

They produced a marvellous tackling display - only for a defensive lapse with five minutes left to hand Dinnington the winning score.

Pocklington hardly saw the ball for the first quarter but they held firm and opened the scoring with a lineout catch-and-drive try credited to hooker Ben Stephenson.

Pock then moved ten points clear as full-back Jack Fletcher kicked ahead and smashed his opposite number in the follow-up, freeing the ball to give centre Joe Holbrough a clear 35-yard run to the line.

Dinnington resumed the offensive at the start of the second period, but again Pocklington held firm against sustained pressure on their own line.

Dinnington then got the boost of a penalty try when Pock thought the ball was out of a close-range scrum and booted clear only to be ruled offside.

Though the margin was down to three points, Pocklington were holding their lead through some excellent defence until a sketchy clearance kick followed by a missed tackle let Dinnington in for the winner.

Meanwhile, Nestle Rowntree lost their North Yorkshire Cup semi-final at Wharfedale 3rds 27-17.

Trees began brightly, and from a lineout then a good driving maul, centre Dave Straker barged his way through to score, Dave Harder converting.

From the restart, though, Trees conceded a penalty and Dale made it 7-3, and, after a period of to and fro, another Trees mistake allowed Dale to score out wide.

Nestle drove upfield seeking a riposte but could not find a way through a good defence, and then Dale got back up the other end to make it 15-7, before a penalty from Harder made it 15-10 at the break.

The second half again saw Trees unable to get over the line and two tries at the other end put them 27-10 behind.

Back they came and, finally, Rob Johnson barged over from fully 30 metres, Harder converting, but Wharfedale's defence held firm thereafter.
