MALTON & Norton return to Yorkshire One action tomorrow at struggling Yarnbury, seeking to guarantee second spot and a play-off place in the quest for promotion.

Club spokesman Bill Laidler explained: "We think one more win should secure at least second place and the chance of a play-off place against the second- placed club in the Durham and Northumberland League."

As it stands, Middlesbrough are holding that second spot behind Durham. The winner takes all play-off process is a familiar one for Malton, who went through a similar experience last season when they lost by two points at Morpeth.

In the four remaining matches of the season, starting tomorrow, Malton will aim to get the win they need at the earliest opportunity and be in a position to pick up the pieces in the unlikely event that leaders Bradford & Bingley should slip up.

The Bees completed a 43-14 win over bottom side West Park Leeds last Saturday to break through the 100-points barrier and extend their lead over Malton to nine points, with both teams having now completed 22 matches.

Malton are without full back Zweli Sodladla and scrum half Paul Angus for the trip to Yarnbury. However, fly-half James Bulmer returns to the squad and is available for selection.

SELBY suffered a 40-26 defeat by Old Brodleians on Easter Saturday, but in front of their biggest crowd of the season they showed their battling qualities to keep up the scoring and earn valuable bonus points.

It is the sort of character they will need to show if they are to beat the drop.

Selby are currently third-bottom, a point above Old Crossleyans who occupy the final relegation place.

Richard Nicholson's side know they must take advantage of their fixtures this weekend. They travel to bottom-club West Park, while the Halifax side head to leaders Bradford & Bingley.

A win for Selby could open up a valuable gap and mean the difference between survival and relegation.

For YORK in seventh place, it is a case of consolidating what they have and building towards next season in their remaining fixtures.

In their last league match, Lee Denham's side were strong enough to hold the leaders to one score in the first half with flanker Josh Parker to the fore. However, they were then steamrollered after the break. York return to league action with a trip to fourth-placed Hullensians tomorrow.

YORK RI head to the Dales tomorrow for a match against Wensleydale, who are second in Yorkshire Four. The Railwaymen are seventh with only three matches remaining this season.
