YORK and hosts Pocklington won trophies at the Junior Charity Sevens tournament held on Easter Sunday.

There was five hours of rugby to enjoy as 20 sides battled it out at Under-13, 14 and 15 age levels in aid of Martin House Children's Hospice.

Local teams from Pocklington, Driffield, Beverley, Hull Ionians, Goole, Selby, York and Malton & Norton all gave a good account of themselves.

There was also a strong West Yorkshire challenge from Roundhegians, Moortown and West Leeds, Wetherby and Old Crossleyans (Halifax), while out of county interest came from Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Luton.

In the Under-15s event, York were convincing winners. After carrying all before them in their qualifying pool, York raced into a 20-point interval lead against Selby in the first semi-final.

Although Selby stepped up in the second half with two good tries, it was not enough as York won 20-10.

Halifax side Old Crossleyans beat Hull Ionians 25-10 in the other semi, but York then turned on the gas in the final to win 45-5.

The Under-14s tournament produced a series of keenly-contested local derbies. Beverley beat Driffield 15-10 in the first semi, and went through to meet host club Pocklington in the final.

Pock themselves had come back from two tries down to beat hot favourites Wetherby 30-20 in the second semi-final. Pocklington took that momentum into the final where they were always ahead and won 20-10, although Beverley gamely kept pegging them back.

At Under-13 level it ended as an all-Leeds final with Moortown edging out Roundhegians 30-25. Driffield ended in third place.

It was a good day all round, and the rain held off until the heavens opened as York were receiving their trophies in the last presentation of the event.
