YORK RUFC could not impose control and composure as they lost 13-3 to Old Brodleians at Clifton Park in Yorkshire One.

Coach Lee Denham's men had to play much of the game with 14 men after scrum-half Ben Johnson was judged to have stamped on an opponent and, in very windy conditions, York were unable to convert long periods of possession and pressure.

Looking to push on from their win over Hullensians, the Shipton Road side defended well as the visitors had the advantage of the strong gusts in the opening half.

They conceded a lot of penalties and, on 25 minutes, York were given another. But, in the ensuing struggle, Johnson was dismissed and Chris Peace had to move behind the pack as the home side tried to reorganise.

Old Brods continued to transgress and another penalty gave York a lineout deep in the opposition half.

Marcus Britland took the ball at the tail of the line and made good ground only for the referee to blow up again. The penalty was within kicking range and Jon Dawes put York in front.

The visitors hit back quickly and a number of tight passes put their replacement number eight over for a try in the corner as they led 5-3 at the break.

York had the wind in the second half and looked as if they would use it to their advantage as their dominant scrum gave them the majority of the ball and a lot of territory.

Old Brods even tried to help when their centre was sin-binned for infringing at the breakdown.

But York were unable to convert their pressure - falling foul of the whistle or seeing the last pass failing to go to hand.

They did get a series of kickable penalties as their momentum forced more fouls but Dawes was unable to convert. One kick hit the post and another went just wide in the wind.

York kept banging on the door and there were some strong carries by Britland and Sam Blain but they were unable to work out how to get across the whitewash.

And, as the game came to a close, it slipped further away.

They lost Britland to a yellow card for infringing at the breakdown and allowed Old Brods to extend their lead through the ensuing penalty. All that remained was for them to miss out on the losing bonus point as, in the penultimate play, the visitors scored a second try.
