YORK RUFC ended their run of frustrating losses with arguably their best performance of the season as they beat in-form Hullensians 24-15 in Yorkshire One at Clifton Park.

The visitors started the more positively and forced York to defend for most of the first quarter of an hour and an infringement by head coach Lee Denham's men at the breakdown saw the Hull outfit kick for the corner.

A tidy lineout and drive allowed their forwards to cross for the first score.

It was a setback that motivated the home side as they started to work harder to keep hold of the ball and go through the phases. York stole a Hullensians lineout deep in the 22 and set up a driving maul.

Dominant, it allowed scrum-half Ben Johnson to touch down an excellent forwards try.

Jon Dawes' conversion gave York a 7-5 lead.

But they fumbled the restart and, after three quick phases, the impressive Dom Bloomfield helped Hullensians retake the lead with a second try.

York responded with their best 15 minutes of the campaign.

Their second try was a wonderful team effort with the forwards working well in the tight and the backs executing simple passing to score. Full-back George Davies started the move with a good break and Dawes' delicate chip forced Hullensians to concede a lineout.

Clean ball and a 20 metre drive brought good direction from Johnson and winger Will Atkin. As the forwards neared the line, the ball was released through the backs and right wing Will Dunlop crossed for an excellent try.

Dawes' conversion from out wide missed but York were back in front 12-10.

As the first half drew to a close, Gareth Singleton showed speed and strength to cross the line and extend the lead.

York managed to keep enough of a hold on the game that they rarely looked like they would relinquish the lead in the second half and Singleton scored a second try and York’s fourth to earn them a bonus point.

Judging an interception and galloping half the pitch, Singleton scored under the posts and Dawes had the easiest of attempts at the posts.

As the game drew to a close, York started to tire and a number of breakdowns weren’t as clean or as quick as they should have been and Hullensians managed a late consolation try.

Selby grabbed their second win of the season when they triumphed in the battle of the basement sides in Yorkshire One. The Sandhill Laners used home advantage to full effect, beating West Park Leeds 19-12, as they moved four points clear of their rivals.
