ERRORS and poor application meant York crashed 31-12 at home to Scarborough as they too endured a disappointing return to Yorkshire One action.

York had a point to prove after the defeat at Yarnbury a fortnight previously but were unable to live up to their potential.

They gave away a number of penalties at the breakdown early on and, from one, Scarborough fly-half Tom Harrison opened the scoring.

The visitors extended their lead after an excellent clearing kick by Harrison as they stole York’s lineout and moved the ball wide to score in the corner, Harrison converting well.

Another simple move by the backs gave the visitors their second try and further indiscipline by York at the breakdown allowed Boro to make it 18-0.

York put together some phases late in the half and, following a rolling maul from a lineout, they moved the ball through hands for Gareth Singleton to score.

However, a rare mistake by the York scrum allowed Scarborough to break blind and score for a 23-5 interval lead.

York had debutant hooker Josh Greenfield sin-binned for a tip tackle on the resumption and the reduction in numbers was felt at scrum time as the usually solid set-piece struggled. They were penalised again and Harrison made it 26-5.

Overall, York looked decidedly average and lacked control. When they did gain possession, it was often given up by a lack of precision at the breakdown or simple knock-ons.

On the plus side, full-back George Davies made some good breaks from broken play and the returning Singleton showed strength with direct running.

As the game closed, the reliable Chris Fox was rewarded with a try that Dawes converted. However, Scarborough had the final word, scoring their fifth try.

Meanwhile, York RI paid for a slow start at unbeaten Yorkshire Three leaders Hessle, conceding three early tries, one converted, en route to a 22-10 defeat.

Trailing 17-0, RI gradually came into the game through the forwards and, before half-time, a lin-eout on Hessle’s five-metre line was fumbled by the hosts and RI man-of-the-match Rob Cuthbertson dived on the ball for a try.

RI were on top in the second half, only fierce tackling keeping them out until Fraser Land fed winger Rossajohn to make it 17-10.

RI threw everything at the hosts but a tiring pack let Hessle break clear at a ruck and seal victory.
