MALTON & NORTON RUFC scored one of the quickest tries ever seen at The Gannock as they beat North Ribblesdale 33-5 in Yorkshire One.

Hooker Jim Thornton cleanly gathered the kick off and handed on to Sam Triffitt who made good yards before passing to wing Ian Cooke who sliced through the visitors defence to race three-quarters of the length of the pitch.

He handed back to Triffitt to cover the remaining 22 metres to touchdown inside 30 seconds.

It was a sign of intent from the Ryedale side, who penned the visitors into their 22 in the opening period and, after a series of scrums, scrum-half Paul Angus used deft footwork to cross after number eight Josh Heggie picked up from the base.

When centre Vus Dyantjies intercepted and ran 80 metres for his first try of the season, Zweli Sodlada's conversions meant it was 21-0 with only 13 minutes gone.

The Dalesman got into the game but, on the stroke of half-time, Ian Cooke hacked on from half-way and his pace took him clear of the chasing defenders to score the bonus point try for Malton in only the opening period.

Malton then began with a bang after the break.

After two minutes they were awarded a scrum ten metres out from the visitors' line.

A good drive had the Ribblesdale back-pedalling and Heggie picked up at the foot of the scrum to cross in the corner for a good forward try and a 35-0 lead.

With the game in the bag, Malton rang the changes to keep things fresh.

Despite suffering a couple of injuries, North Ribblesdale were still trying to get the ball to their three-quarters and did produce some good rugby.

That was underlined after 51 minutes when swift passing got the ball quickly to their left wing, who raced away from half-way to get a well-deserved consolation try.

Mosborough scored two tries in 11 minutes to lead York RI 12-0 at New Lane in Yorkshire Four.

Andy Brentnall jinked his way through to score for RI, with Baptiste Brui adding the conversion, but the visitors scored again to lead 17-7.

Brui reduced the gap with a penalty only for Mosborough to hit back with a bonus point try.

RI hit back with a well-taken try from Andy Brentnall to only trail 22-15 at the break.

They did much better in the scrums and loose in the second half. Brui's penalty made it a four point game and, with the visitors obviously tiring, RI took advantage with a Ben Hartop try, and Brui conversion, for a 25-22 victory which had looked unlikely early on.

Pocklington, meanwhile, lost 29-13 at Wheatley Hills in North One East.

York win bragging rights

YORK seized the derby bragging rights with a 40-12 victory over Selby at Sandhill Lane in Yorkshire One.

It was a five point haul for coach Lee Denham's men following last week's defeat to Bradford Salem and they were soon in front when Greg Davis crossed and Jon Dawes added the first of five conversions.

York were a constant threat at scrum time but they still conceded a number of penalties, three in front of the posts, which Selby were unable to convert.

Chris Peace grabbed York's second try, stealing the ball deep in his own half and showing good pace to run in and give his side a 12-0 lead.

It was 19-0 when Ben Johnson dotted down after the scrum marched to the Selby line.

But the home side were on the board before half-time as they caught the York defence napping to score.

The ever improving Sam Blain was on hand to crash over for the important fourth try as the Clifton Parkers started the second half positively before Selby scored their second try from a catch and drive.

As the game closed, York seized further control and added more points.

The best move of the game came when Peace broke free and cantered upfield. Johnson was in support to continue the move but should have kept hold of the ball rather than attempting a speculative pass.

Marcus Britland, though, took advantage of another turnover scrum and picked from the base and bustled his way over the line from 30 meters out.

The final try came as Dawes, now playing at fly-half, received the ball from a Blain turnover and started on a mazy run downfield. He passed to Atkins to complete the move and the scoring.
