MALTON & Norton started their Yorkshire Division One campaign in style with a five-try 35-13 victory at Hullensians.

The visitors showed how to play into the teeth of a strong wind, picking and driving upfield for No 8 Ali Coe to touch down in the fourth minute, full back Zweli Sodladla adding a penalty.

The hosts replied with a penalty but the visitors were soon back to their close-in attack, prop Rob Featherstone scoring for Sodladla to convert.

Hullensians responded with a try but Ian Cooke waltzed past two defenders and re-gathered his own kick ahead to make the half-time score 20-8.

Now with the wind in their favour, Sodladla's early penalty settled any Malton & Norton nerves but back came Hullensians with a try.

However, they lost a man to the sin bin for persistent offending, allowing winger Jack Cranage to cross for his first try in Malton & Norton colours.

By now. the visitors' superior fitness was telling and Sodladla broke in centrefield to run 40 metres to the line before adding the conversion to put Malton & Norton in good heart for their home derby against York on Saturday.

Selby gave debuts to youngsters James Fox (scrum half)., Robert Oliver (second row) and Andrew McLoughlin (bench) in their 21-0 defeat at Scarborough.

The visitors dominated territory and possession in the first 25 minutes but lacked a cutting edge to get over the try line.

Selby, whose best player was forward James Blaymire, missed penalties via fly half Ian Adamson in the 46th and 52nd minutes.

On Saturday, Yorkshire Division One new boys Bradford & Bingley are at Selby.

Three-quarter Josh Britland made a notable return to Pocklington, running in a hat-trick of tries in a 27-0 success over Northern in North One East.

Britland, playing centre in the first half and fly half in the second, followed up kicks ahead three times to touch down for the first and last two of Pocklington's five tries.

It was a day of mixed emotions for the 21-year old as there was a minute's silence in memory of his grandfather Gerry Wood, the former Pocklington, Headingley, Harrogate, North of England and Combined Services centre who died earlier in the week.

Pocklington grabbed well-taken tries from Britland and hooker Ben Stephenson, then defended determinedly to reach the interval 10-0 ahead, even though they had been reduced to 13 men by yellow cards.

Back to strength in the second half, they pulled away with the best score of the day as the ball went through a dozen pairs of hands to send centre Billy Hardy carving through; then two more Britland kick-chases in the last quarter, the second converted by Hardy, saw them to a bonus-point win.

In Yorkshire Division Four, York RI won 39-21 at home to Burley.

Down 7-0, RI hit back with tries from Rob Cuthbertson, Alec Webster and Ben Hartop, two being converted by Baptiste Briu .

Then Tom Greaves sprinted 70 metres for the home side to lead 24-7 at the interval, securing the bonus point.

Brendon Aherne added a try for RI, only for Burley to make it 29-21.

This stung RI into action, Greaves acrobatically squeezing in at the corner.

The home side finished off with a super try from man of the match Charlie Richardson.
