THREE tries in the final quarter helped Selby RUFC end Malton & Norton’s 16-game winning run in Yorkshire One.

The Swans triumphed 22-14 at Sandhill Lane to all-but secure their Yorkshire One status for next season, while Malton’s title hopes took a severe jolt.

The visitors dominated territory and possession in the first half, but only led 7-5. Despite Malt scoring first in the second period, Selby finished strongly to take a bonus point win.

Malton could have gone in front after ten minutes as Selby were penalised for not rolling away, but winger Ian Cooke missed the penalty.

Selby had a chance to take the lead after 17 minutes when fly-half Cody Whittaker hacked through the defence but a poor bounce foiled his attempts to gather the ball.

After more unrelenting pressure from Malton, number eight Ali Coe was credited with the opening try in the 22nd minute, with Cooke adding the extras.

Selby, on only their third incursion into the visitors’ half, reduced their arrears in added on time. A move started by winger Ben Lunt on the right found James Blaymire on the left and he put fellow flanker Patrick Rowntree over for a try.

Selby prop and acting captain Duncan Hardy was yellow-carded early in the second half and Malton looked certain to score on 44 minutes, but conceded a penalty on the Selby line for offside.

Two minutes later they were turned over on the Selby line and then held up, but the pressure told after 53 minutes, with centre Siyabonga Moabi going over for his first try for Malt which Cooke converted.

Cooke was off target with a 65th-minute penalty attempt before Selby reduced the deficit after 69 minutes with an excellent try from full-back Iain Adamson, with Lunt and centre Alex Webster prominent in the build up.

After an outstanding 50-metre burst from flanker Blaymire, Selby should have scored but the final pass was delayed.

Malton replacement Lewis Welsh was sent to the bin on 78 minutes, but the hosts failed to capitalise until the first minute of added on time when they took a scrum against the head on the Malton five-metre line, with number eight Martin Protheroe crashing over for the try.

The Malton kick off was safely pouched by Selby and the ball fed to prop Robert Bourke. He made inroads before feeding Webster, who sprinted 50 metres to score under the posts and give Whittaker an easy conversion.

York maintained their winning run with a 29-13 home victory over Bridlington in Yorkshire One.

Full-back George Davis grabbed 19 points as the Clifton Parkers strengthened their grip on third place in the table.

A good kick through from fly-half Marcus Britland and a strong run by Davis resulted in a penalty, which Davis converted for an early lead.

A strong counter attack by Davis allowed York to attack with real menace and the ball was recycled to Chris Fox and then Billy Cakaunitabua before Britland crossed for the first try.

Davis converted for a 10-0 lead.

The penalty count continued to rack up and Davis added to York’s tally, while Brid were successful with two attempts.

After the break, York put pressure on the Brid line and, after a lineout catch and drive, the ball was released to Davis for a try.

David Bates almost laid on a try for Andy Kay, before Davis struck again with the boot to make it 21-6.

Centre Eddie Bradshaw then made good ground in midfield before releasing winger Charlie Nicholson, who left the touchline to cut inside and score.

Brid forced three quick penalties en route to scoring a converted try, but Davis added his fourth penalty to round off the scoring.
