A SUPERB forward display laid the foundations for Selby RUFC's 18-8 win at Bridlington in Yorkshire One.

The Swans pack was boosted by the return of flanker Robert Taylor, an ex-Selby captain who is back at Sandhill Lane after spending several years living in Germany.

Brid kicked off with the advantage of a strong wind in heavy conditions at Dukes Park, but excellent defence, led by second row Brendan Lanaghan and prop Robert Bourke, kept them at bay.

After 19 minutes, Selby went 7-0 in front after excellent counter-attacking saw winger Ben Lunt and full-back Dan Porter exchange passes with flanker Rob Taylor before Porter raced over and fly-half Josh Cruise converted.

Brid reduced the arrears on 33 minutes when Selby were penalised for an accidental trip and fly-half Tom Kemp kicked the penalty.

Three minutes later, the hosts took the lead after three missed tackles allowed centre Gareth Roberts to touch down in the corner.

Selby had a dream start to the second half after Bridlington knocked on from the kick-off.

The forwards took charge from the set scrum before the ball was spread wide for winger Nathan Spencer to score wide out.

The Swans went further in front on 57 minutes with Cruise kicking an excellent penalty after Bridlington were penalised for offside.

Selby went close twice without breaking through and Cruise missed a penalty on 74 minutes, but he made amends with a three-pointer two minutes later when Bridlington were caught offside.

Meanwhile, York were 67-19 winners over Wath-on-Dearne in the same division, strengthening their bid for a top three finish.
