YORK RUFC upset unbeaten Yorkshire One leaders Doncaster Phoenix to reach the quarter-finals of the Corporate Leisurewear Yorkshire Shield.

The Clifton Parkers' 16-5 home victory earned them a trip to Bradford Salem in the last eight of the competition on Saturday, December 20.

A combative, pulsating tussle was bossed by York in the first quarter, as their back row made light of the heavy conditions and George Davis landed an early penalty.

York then embarked on an expansive back move from their own half which was continued by the pack, creating a touchdown for second row David Bates.

Opportunities remained at a premium, but York created an opening in the Phoenix 22 and the pack drove over the whitewash for a try by debutant Marcus Britland and a 13-0 half-time lead.

The second period followed a similar pattern, but York doubled their defensive efforts and Davis kicked his second penalty to open up a three-score cushion.

The hosts' defensive line held firm until deep into the last quarter when Phoenix scored an unconverted try, but that was the final score of the match.

Selby missed two late opportunities to snatch victory as they bowed out of the Yorkshire Shield 18-17 at West Leeds.

The Swans were depleted by injuries and unavailability, but they came away feeling they should have booked a place in round three.

Having trailed 15-8 at the break, Selby took the lead for the first time at 17-15 in the 72nd minute but West Leeds hit back with a penalty.

Full-back Josh Cruise then missed a drop goal attempt on 77 minutes and penalty effort two minutes later.

Playing on a pitch that was already cut up quite badly in the sodden condition, Selby were caught cold after only two minutes as West Leeds winger Josh Cassell scored in the corner and fly-half Dale Breakwell converted.

Selby hit back four minutes later with a penalty from Cruise for offside, but Breakwell replied three minutes later.

Cruise missed a penalty chance after 15 minutes, but Selby reduced their arrears four minutes later after a penalty kick to the West Leeds five-metre line.

Selby won their throw and, although their drive was stopped short, the ball was recycled for prop Robert Bourke to crash over for his first try for the first XV.

West Leeds restored their seven-point lead with a try from full-back Jack Marshall after 31 minutes.

Despite dominating most of the second half in terms of territory, Selby were unable to crack a solid West Leeds defence but three Cruise penalties put them in front with eight minutes remaining.

Breakwell was on target after 75 minutes to put West Leeds back in front and Cruise then missed his two chances.

West Leeds will travel to Yarnbury in the quarter-finals, while Malton & Norton, handed a bye when Acklam withdrew, host Pontefract and Scarborough entertain Bridlington.

All the quarter-finals are due to be played on December 20.
