THERE were plenty of positives for Pocklington RUFC to take from their 42-0 defeat to higher league Morley in round one of the Yorkshire Cup.

The East Yorkshire side gave a clutch of youngsters and second teamers a first senior run out, while Morley fielded the majority of their SSE National League Two North line-up.

Pock had several injuries and some players were rested, while a further group went to Twickenham to support former team-mate Rob Webber playing for England against the All Blacks.

With only seven players remaining from the previous week's squad, six youngsters were given their debuts and a handful of veterans were wheeled out of retirement.

Pock probably spent more time on the offensive than their opponents, matching them in several phases, but the big difference was Morley's greater size and strength.

Morley set down a marker with two converted tries inside the first 15 minutes.

Pocklington came back with some determined attacks, but the day was summed up in a ten-minute spell in the second quarter.

Twice Pock forced a lineout near the Morley line and went for a catch and drive. Each time Morley held the home surge then took play upfield to get similar lineout positions at the other end, which they ruthlessly turned into converted tries for a 28-0 interval lead.

Though it was closer in the second half, Pock's considerable efforts brought no reward on the scoreboard.

Teenage centre Jack Walters put in a massive tackling stint, the makeshift front five stood up well in the set pieces, while back rows Archie Fothergill and Joe Brown took the game to Morley throughout.

As Pock tired in the heavy conditions, Morley ran in two more converted tries to book a home tie against Wharfedale in the next round.
