YORK RI made it seven wins in eight league matches and moved up to second in Yorkshire Four with a 24-19 victory over Halifax.

Strong performances from props Darren Lonsdale and Andy McCarthy enabled RI’s pack to dominate at New Lane and starve the dangerous Halifax backs of any quality ball.

Rob Cuthbertson crashed over for RI’s opening try, with Baptiste Briu adding the extras.

A clever chip forward by Stew Watson was collected by Andy Brentnall, who ran in under the posts for Briu to again convert.

A yellow card reduced RI to 14 men, which Halifax exploited to hit back with a try, reducing RI’s lead to 14-5 at half-time.

The RI back row, led by man of the match Ewan Metcalfe, bossed the second half and a well worked move saw the ball reach winger Brentnall, who scored his second try. Briu converted and added a long range penalty to give RI a comfortable lead.

A couple of errors allowed Fax to run in late tries.
