SELBY RUFC are yet to hit the ground running in Yorkshire One this season, reckons head coach Richard Nicholson.

The Sandhill Laners' chief admitted to being a frustrated figure on the touchlines last weekend as his side failed to build on a good start against Heath and eked out a 20-17 victory.

Having preceded that with a narrow defeat against Scarborough, Nicholson is backing his stars to fulfil their potential when they travel to Wath-upon-Dearne in Yorkshire One tomorrow.

"We started very well against Heath, got a lead and then we went off the boil a little bit," he reflected on last week's display. "It was quite frustrating from a coach's point of view but the main thing was to win the game.

"We have another tough game this weekend. Wath is always a difficult place to go but we are looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can back up from last week and get a bit of momentum."

Nicholson added: "The players were frustrated as well. That's good. They want to improve and get better as a group. We trained very well earlier in the week and we will prepare well for Wath."

The Selby chief expected to have a full squad at this disposal, with the exception of second row Brendan Lanaghan, who misses the game because of work commitments.

York are hoping to capitalise on home advantage when they entertain Pontefract. The Clifton Parkers were comfortable winners in their opening game at Shipton Road against North Ribblesdale but were beaten at Old Brodlieans last time out.

Head coach Sean Bass has repeatedly extolled the value of picking up victories on familiar soil.

Malton & Norton travel to Heath in Yorkshire One - a side they beat 57-0 just a couple of weeks ago in the Yorkshire Shield.

The Gannock outfit were impressive in their 26-10 victory over Hullensians in their opening home game of the season with recent acquisitions Vusumzi Dyantjies and Zwelakhe Sodladla among the try scorers.

"Once again Ali Coe and Jim Thornton were outstanding in a good pack performance with Ian Cooke, Charlie Birkett and Nick Daley the pick of a slick back division," said club spokesman Bill Laidler.

"As they (the team) settle down as a unit, the side will improve even further and, with strength in depth, competition will be fierce."

After opening their North One East campaign with two good wins, Pocklington expect a tough game when they entertain Alnwick at Percy Road.

Alnwick won both the league encounters between the two sides last season.

Pocklington have a couple of doubts and again pick a squad of 19 with young prop Jack Helme and experienced three-quarter Henry Mitchell both called up after being try scorers in the second team last week.

York RI will bid to build on their strong start to the Yorkshire Four season when they make the short trip to Wetherby. The New Lane side have won their opening games of the campaign, the last a 38-12 thumping of Sheffield Oaks.
