MALTON & NORTON renew life in Yorkshire One with a trip to opponents they have never played before.

The Gannock outfit go to Doncaster Phoenix for their opening fixture looking to get off to a good start following their relegation from North One East.

Buoyed by a 57-0 hammering of Heath in the first round of the Yorkshire Shield last weekend, club chiefs are still sounding a note of caution as the league campaign gets under way.

The ongoing harvest means Malt will be missing a slew of players up front and spokesman Bill Laidler believes it will be better to see how things are going after half a dozen games before making bold predictions on the club's fortunes this season.

"We did better than expected against Heath and particularly the defensive side of it," he said. "They didn't get any points at all and never looked like troubling us.

"It will be a tester at Doncaster and we still have one or two missing and that does make a difference up front. We just want to do what we can and see where we are in six weeks time."

Home advantage could be key as Selby kick off their Yorkshire One year against Scarborough.

The Sandhill Laners warmed up for the new term with a thumping 51-5 victory in the Yorkshire Shield over Hullensians and will meet West Leeds in the next round.

Head coach Richard Nicholson, though, believes it will be far tougher when the Seasiders come to Selby.

He said: "It was a good start but they came missing a few players and they had a lad sent off in the first 20 minutes. Looking back at the video, I was very encouraged by the performance but there is no good getting carried away.

"It is always difficult in early season to get a full strength side out and we are not reading too much into the result. Home advantage (to begin the league season) can make a big difference.

"We are fully aware that this week will be a lot harder. They have a very professional set up. They are well run and they will come at full strength. They came did a job on us last season in the Yorkshire Shield semi-final and we are expecting a really hard encounter - up front particularly."

Nicholson welcomes back Josh Cruise to the squad but is still without Jacob Robinson, who continues to recover from a slight knee strain and needs another week.

York, whose Yorkshire Shield match with Old Rishworthians was off when the hosts cancelled the game, will finally look to get into competitive action as they open their Yorkshire One season against North Ribblesdale at Clifton Park.

Their squad of 18 includes Alex Nixon at full-back, Chris Fox in the forwards and Freddie Potrykus at hooker.

Pocklington's North One East season opens at Percy Road against Ilkley.

The visitors are newcomers to N1E having been promoted as the 2014 Yorkshire One champions and Yorkshire Shield winners.

Pocklington are without concussion victim Karl Durkin in the forwards but James Wilkinson is back at the club after finishing university. In the backs former Hull RUFC three-quarter Matt White makes his debut at centre.

York Railway Institute get started in Yorkshire Four by visiting Wensleydale.
