YORK Rugby Union Club’s bid to make an early mark in the Yorkshire Shield was denied when their hosts Old Rishworthians cancelled the game, giving York a bye.

But there were emphatic wins for both Malton & Norton and Selby.

New-look Malton & Norton cruised to a 57-0 triumph at Heath.

The floodgates finally opened after 25 minutes when, from a ruck in centre field, Malton wing Sizwe Zondo picked up the loose ball and sprinted home for Ian Cooke to convert.

Prop Nick Salisbury went over from a drive, Cooke again successful and just before half-time another solid drive saw fly half Nick Daley waltz in. Cooke’s boot stretched the half-time lead to 26-0.

A penalty try, converted by Cooke, early in the second half maintained the momentum as John Lumley then crossed.

Cooke rounded the rout off, legging almost the length of the pitch and kicking the conversion.

Selby’s advance was clear-cut, battering visitors Hullensians 51-5.

Fly-half Dan Porter’s unconverted try broke the deadlock before winger Charlton McCoy crossed.

Porter got his second with debutant centre Peter Turner converting.

Porter emulated his rapid start of the first half by bagging the first after half-time, winger Ben Lunt joining in the try-fest soon after.

Hullensians managed to cross, but there were further tries from McCoy, a fourth for Porter, Alex Webster and debutant winger Jack Guest, with two Porter conversions.
