A WIN or draw will be enough for York RUFC as they try to finally play their Northern Division Intermediate Cup pool two tie at Consett tomorrow.

The Clifton Parkers’ 22-17 win over Medicals last weekend has put them in the driving seat in their group and they will progress to the next stage if they can avoid defeat.

This will be the third time the two sides have tried to play the tie, with weather postponing the previous two occasions.

York head coach Sean Bass believes his men will need to “meet fire with fire” in County Durham and he has brought big-hitting brothers Adam and Russ Bowers into the squad to cause some disruption.

“If there are any injuries on a Thursday evening at training it’s usually caused by a Bower,” joked Bass.

“They are big strong lads, they train very hard and we will get 30 or 40 minutes out of them and they will meet you head on.”

James Hartley, who has struggled to secure a place in the squad after missing a chunk of the earlier part of the season because of farming duties, has also been included.

Bass added: “He will be itching to play well and I am looking forward to seeing him play.”

York’s win over Medicals was their first in 2014 and Bass described it as a “big relief”. Now he wants his men to kick on.

“They threw everything at us and were young, enthusiastic players who fired into us,” said the York chief.

“Consett have got a big, strong set of forwards and we will have to meet fire with fire.”

Malton & Norton spokesman Bill Laidler says his club have targeted a hat-trick of wins as they battle to avoid North One East relegation.

The Ryedale side travel to struggling rivals Morpeth, while bottom two Sheffield and Middlesbrough meet in South Yorkshire.

Laidler said: “We are at Morpeth and we have to win there. We are two points ahead of them but they have a game in hand, so a win would keep us clear of them.

“It is very tight at the bottom but it will become a bit clearer after this weekend with everyone playing each other.

“It is not going to be decided – I think it will go right to the end. We need three wins at least to steer clear.

“We have still got teams to play like Middlesbrough, Sheffield and Driffield, so it is very much in our hands.”

Malton didn’t play last week as the league took a break for cup matches and they will be missing fly-half Charlie Ramsay for their trip to Northumberland. He is taking university exams.

James Bulmer and Nick Daley are battling it out to take his place in the starting line-up.

Pocklington return to action at Percy Road against leaders Cleckheaton in North One East (kick off 3pm).

So far this season Cleckheaton have won 18 and lost just two of their league games, both to second placed Huddersfield.

When the sides met at Cleckheaton at the start of November Pocklington led by one point going into the last quarter, but Cleckheaton’s size and experience eventually told as they scored three times late on to win 24-6.

Pock have selected a 20-man squad that includes three-quarters Pete Massie and Charlie Allen, who have been missing in recent weeks.

Elsewhere, Selby will be looking to bounce back from a 41-15 loss at Old Brodleians as they entertain Pontefract in Yorkshire One.

York RI have a New Lane engagement with Halifax in Yorkshire Four.
