Pocklington RUFC beat North One East rivals Driffield
11:21am Monday 28th October 2013 in Rugby Union
Pocklington RUFC’S fitness and intensity were too much for North One East rivals Driffield as they pulled away late on to a convincing 36-10 victory.
It was keenly contested for the first hour. Pocklington took an early lead with a Billy Hardy penalty, but Driffield overhauled them with left wing Rob McGill’s kick and chase try that Robin Kitching converted.
A lovely midfield break by Jake Bishop made a try for fellow centre Joe Holbrough. Hardy converted before limping off with the recurrence of a hamstring problem.
Kitching kicked a penalty from halfway on the half hour to again level the scores, but Pocklington went into the interval 15-10 ahead when flanker Jack Holbrough broke down the middle. Good offloads sent skipper and scum half Ben Rees charging over.
The defence repulsed Driffield after the break, determined tackling snuffing out an overlap in the corner and another big hit holding up a visitors’ forward over the line.
That took the sting out of Driffield and Bishop charged down a kick, spun and romped 25 yards to the corner, Sam Askem booting over the conversion.
After a series of pack charges Rees took play left before Jack Holbrough ran back right and replacement fullback Askem galloped over unopposed then converted.
Pocklington bagged a late fifth try, number eight Matt Davies burrowing through. Askem again converted.
