Bumper Clifton Park crowd on cards as Leeds Carnegie hit the road
9:45am Saturday 12th October 2013 in Rugby Union
BRITISH Lions legend Sir Ian McGeechan has hailed the return of Leeds Carnegie RUFC to York.
The Headingley side will meet Scottish outfit Gala in the British & Irish Cup at Clifton Park on Sunday, October 20 (kick off 2.30pm).
Leeds return to York a year after they played Jersey at Shipton Road in the same competition last season.
McGeechan, chairman of Leeds, said: “Taking Leeds Carnegie to the Yorkshire rugby public is something I am very passionate about.
“It was great to meet new and old friends last season, and we have worked hard to ensure that there is room for these games in our fixture list this year.
“These games are about much more than one off occasions, they form a vital part of our development programme at academy level so we can harness the best talent in the county and we are very much looking forward to going to York again.”
Leon Shouksmith, York chairman, added: “Last year’s fixture was a great success and we are very pleased to welcome Leeds Carnegie and Gala this year.
“This provides an excellent opportunity for York residents to come and experience Championship rugby on their doorstep.”
Last year’s game was well attended and York are expecting a bumper crowd.
Carnegie kick off their Pool Five campaign at Bristol tomorrow and the Clifton Park clash is followed by a further ‘on-the-road’ game against Aberavon at Hull Ionians’ Brantingham Park ground on Saturday, December 14, kick off 2pm.
