York RUFC to be in the mix
IT’S time for York to step up to the plate, says head coach Sean Bass.
The Clifton Parkers, who start their Yorkshire One term at home to Acklam, have been building a squad for the past couple of seasons and shocked North One East side Pocklington in a pre-season friendly.
That has only encouraged Bass’s belief that his side can mix it with the best and he said his team’s task now was to “strive” to get into the higher division.
Boosted by the additions of youth team product Harry Scurr and new arrival Toby Atkin, Bass estimated he had also been able to hold on to “90 per cent” of last season’s side.
“We are trying to build not just a team of 18 to 20 players but 25 to 30 who could all play for the first team,” he said.
“We have a lot of talented players in the second team this week who could arguably play first-team rugby. It’s about keeping them interested because they are in our plans.
“We have had a good summer and we have got to step up to the plate now. I recognised potential in this team two years ago and trying to instil that belief was difficult because we had such a young side.
“We appointed a very young captain in Chris Fox and I just feel that we can mix it with the likes of Pocklington and Malton.
