Five rugby league greats represented in Wembley statue
10:52am Friday 24th August 2012 in Rugby League
FIVE rugby league greats are to be represented in the statue celebrating the sport’s long association with Wembley.
The work of art will incorporate Billy Boston, Eric Ashton, Martin Offiah, Gus Risman and Alex Murphy.
All five were shortlisted after a public vote and selection panels comprising fans, journalists, coaches, players, national newspaper editors and MPs.
The decision to involve all five was made by the Rugby Football League board. Chief executive Nigel Wood said: “Every generation of the sport is celebrated.”
It is planned that the statue will be unveiled prior to the Rugby League World Cup 2013 semi-final double-header at Wembley next November.
A statue of football legend Bobby Moore is the only other work of public art at the stadium.
