Acorn meet New Earswick All Blacks in York cup

YORK Acorn booked a semi-final meeting with New Earswick All Blacks in the York & District Amateur Rugby League Cup after a 30-4 preliminary round victory over hosts Heworth.

The York rivals will meet at New Earswick in the last four on Wednesday (7pm), with the winner taking on Selby Warriors in the final on Wednesday, May 23, at Heworth (7pm, admission £3).

Acorn took the lead against Heworth on five minutes when Anthony Chilton sold a dummy and touched down before converting.

On 22 minutes, a gap was created out wide which Adam Sellars exploited as he raced over from 20 yards. Chilton again converted.

Prop Chris Rushworth stretched the lead on 34 minutes when he went over from close range. Again Chilton goaled for an 18-point lead at half-time.

Acorn put the game to bed in the first minute of the second half when Nick Caldwell scored after Heworth had knocked on.

Heworth prop Tom Speck was causing plenty of problems in attack, but the visitors scored again when full-back Eddie Clapham latched on to a Chilton kick.

Heworth’s efforts were rewarded on 64 minutes when Ben Potter capitalised on some good goal line pressure to go over.

Acorn’s Stephen Mackley rounded off the scoring on 78 minutes.

Heworth were served well by Lewis Worthington, Bobby Smith and Adam Caddy, while for Acorn Steve Doswell Chris Rushworth and Jimmy Mountford had good games.
