York Acorn's John Waldron waltzes in for four tries
9:57am Monday 23rd April 2012 in Rugby League
FOUR-TRY full-back John Waldron helped York Acorn ARLC to a 20-12 victory over Eccles in National Conference division one.
The Blue and Golds did not have it all their own way at Thanet Road, but they did enough to preserve their 100 per cent start to the league campaign.
Waldron bagged his first try on eight minutes when he made space down the short side and Anthony Chilton goaled.
Eccles enjoyed a spell of pressure on the Acorn line and that paid off on 16 minutes when winger Mike McGrath got over in the corner after centre Kashley Watkins had created the space.
Six minutes later McGrath crossed again and scrum-half Mike Carney goaled to give Eccles a 10-6 lead.
Waldron kept Acorn in it when he zipped in at the corner to level at 10-10 after 26 minutes.
Mike Carney put the visitors in front at half-time when he kicked a penalty on 34 minutes.
Acorn kept the visitors scoreless in the second period and Chilton levelled with a penalty on 50 minutes.
Man of the match Waldron then scored tries on either flank on 55 and 73 minutes to seal the win.
Aaron Thompson again stood out, with good support from Joe Budd in an unaccustomed half-back role.
Meanwhile, winless Heworth paid the price for poor ball retention and sloppy tackling as they crashed 46-4 at home to Ovenden in division two.
Winger Lewis Worthington scored the Villagers’ only try on 25 minutes after a good kick through by Tyler Craig, but they trailed 24-4 at the break and Ovenden scored a total of nine tries in the match.
Prop Mark Hayes worked tirelessly in Heworth’s losing cause, as did Chris Varley and debutants Carl Smith and Jack Law.
